Tutorial05: Adjust the timing of your edits

For this tutorial, you will be watching all the videos at http://url.cailab.net/ba and turning in one video demonstrating your mastery of the skills presented in all tutorial videos.

First you will need to download and extract the following file from the Adobe site. This file includes all the practice files you'll need for this tutorial: https://learndownload.adobe.com/pub/learn/premiere/trim-video-clips.zip

Video 1: Trim clips on the Timeline

  1. In Premiere Pro, open the file 05_01 Trim clips on the timeline.prproj from the files you downloaded.
  2. Practice all the tools and functions reviewed in the video, including:
    • You can extend or shorten the part of the clip included in the sequence, as long as there is footage available in the original clip. A small white triangle on either end of the sequence clip tells you if you’re already using the first or last frame of the original material.
    • Drag the ends of clips as if you were resizing a window to extend or shorten them by trimming. You won’t be able to trim a clip over an adjacent clip.
    • Use the Ripple Edit tool to trim clips without leaving a gap or to push adjacent clips later in the sequence.
    • Use the Rolling Edit tool to adjust the timing of an edit between two clips, extending one clip by the same amount you shorten the other.
    • To prevent unwanted changes, you can lock a whole track by clicking the padlock icon on the track header.
    • Remember to choose the Selection tool when you have finished using the trimming tools.
  3. Assessment and deliverables: In class: You will demonstrate your understanding of the target functions in class. On-line: You will complete a Google Form

Video 2: Trim clips in the Program Monitor

  1. In Premiere Pro, open the file 05_02 Trim clips in the Program monitor.prproj from the files you downloaded.
  2. Practice all the tools and functions reviewed in the video, including:
    • View your sequence in Trim mode to make precise trim adjustments to your clips. To enter Trim mode in the Program Monitor, double-click the end of a clip.
    • Drag on the video images in the Program Monitor to trim a clip, or use the buttons at the bottom of the panel.
    • Change the way trimming works by Control-clicking (Windows) or Command-clicking (macOS) on the video images in the Program Monitor while in Trim mode, or in the Timeline panel. A red pointer means regular trimming, a yellow cursor means ripple trimming.
    • Exit Trim mode by clicking an empty area in the Timeline panel.
  3. Assessment and deliverables: In class: You will demonstrate your understanding of the target functions in class. On-line: You will complete a Google Form

Video 3: Use Sync Locks and Track Locks

  1. In Premiere Pro, open the file 05_03 Sync locks and track locks.prproj from the files you downloaded.
  2. Practice all the tools and functions reviewed in the video, including:
    • To lock tracks, click the padlock icon on the track. No changes can be made to tracks that are locked.
    • To enable and disable the Sync Lock for a track, click Toggle Sync Lock. When the Sync Lock is on, clips on the track will stay in sync with clips on a track that you’re ripple trimming or inserting.
    • The audio and video parts of a linked clip remain together automatically, so they’ll stay in sync when you make adjustments. You can disable or enable Linked Selection in the Timeline panel by clicking the Linked Selection button at the top left of the Timeline panel.
  3. Assessment and deliverables: Apply many of the skills you've learned so far to the video 05_03 Sync locks and track locks.prproj. At the very least, complete the following:
    > Import additional pictures of your own choosing
    > Add titles
    > Adjust audio (you can also add audio!)
    > Trim clips
    > Play around with the sync locks and track locks
    > Export your video to mp4 using the file name 05_03 Sync locks and track locks Myname.mp4 and upload to Google Classroom.
